Friends of Shishu Mandir was started as a nonprofit in late 2017
History
Our origins began back in 2011. My wife and I had the opportunity to live in Bangalore India through a work assignment through her company. At the outset I fell in love with the country. Through an acquaintance I was introduced to the Shishu Mandir Education center and the children there who were beginning to learn how to ride unicycles. There were four unicycles there at the time that about 100 children had to share.
After working with the children and teachers at the school for a short while, I decided I wanted to do more. Over time, I bought more unicycles and added juggling/circus arts equipment over the three years I lived in India. Since my return to the US, I have travelled back to India annually to work with the children and expand the Unicycling and Juggling Program.
The children at the school really enjoy learning how to ride and juggle. The school has been able to use the program to differentiate themselves from other schools in Bangalore. My goals with the Friends of Shishu Mandir non-profit are to further promote the program, expand the level of equipment available to the children and to build a sustaining model for years to come.
